Bachelor/ Master Thesis: Robust Rotor Design

Thesis topic: Robust Rotor Design – stochastic analysis of manufacturing tolerances

Low Pressure Turbine Rotors are one of the most critical parts in a turbine engine. Therefore it is essential to ensure a robust design. To account for manufacturing tolerances typically the assumed adverse combination is assessed, but this approach neglects all possible interactions between the tolerances. As it is not possible to calculate each combination of tolerances by hand, those tolerances should be assessed probabilistically with a Monte-Carlo calculation to ensure a robust design.


  • Get familiarized in structural rotor assessments
  • Define a suitable parametric model of one rotor stage of a Low Pressure Turbine
  • Implement a parametric model of the geometry within the open source framework CalculiX
  • Perform a stochastic analysis within the software ProSi and interpret results
  • Transfer approach to a broader band of parameters and connected rotor stages


  • Student in the field of mechanical or aerospace engineering or any related field
  • Basic knowledge of the Finite Element method
  • Good mathematical and mechanical knowledge
  • Basic programming or scripting experience, e.g. Python, c/c++, Matlab
  • Basic understanding of stochastic and probabilistic analysis
